Preparation for Birth and Beyond Program
Preparation for Birth and Beyond Program
PPA’s antenatal services include classes and workshops for parents and professional development for Health Professionals.
A typical PPA antenatal class series or workshop includes group work antenatally and a postnatal reunion session. We also deliver on-going weekly prenatal exercise classes.
There are also a number of short courses which we can offer with a specialized focus. These short courses are both budget and time sensitive, 3-hour workshops. Topics cover VBAC, water birth, homebirth, antenatal education for hospitalised women, young parenting and a post-birth debrief workshop.
PPA offers the newly designed Preparation for Birth and Beyond curriculum, developed by the UK Department of Health, but content is also flexible and is tailored to the group’s individual needs.
The Preparation for Birth and Beyond curriculum includes:
- Our developing baby - fetal development; protecting baby’s health and well-being; parents’ hopes and worries.
- Changes for me and us – becoming a mother or father; becoming a family; looking after our relationship; rights and responsibilities.
- Giving birth and meeting our baby – planning and getting ready; birth partners; labour and giving birth; when nature needs a hand; meeting our baby.
- Caring for our baby – getting to know our baby; bonding with our baby; feeding our baby; keeping our baby safe.
- Our health and well-being – being resilient; being healthy; feeding good; coping well; making changes; love and sex
- People who are there for us – support for us; meeting other new parents; services for new parents and young babies.
Courses can be run as intensive workshops; 4-8 week class series or as a drop-in style and can incorporate other services from midwives, physiotherapists and maternal health nurses.
PPA professional development services for Health Professionals include courses for running antenatal classes.
